The Books I'm Reading Now
I'm reading Meghan Majumdar's novel A Guardian and a Thief; I'm reading Ling Ling Huang's speculative fiction novel Immaculate Conception; and I'm listening to Kiran Desai's novel The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny.
What are you reading, bookworms?
01 A Guardian and a Thief by Megha Majumdar
In a near-future Kolkata, India, Ma is the manager of a food pantry for those in need. She's days away from bringing her daughter and father to meet her husband in Michigan, But the famine is devastating in Kolkata, and Ma has been skimming food supplies for her own household, and she justifies this to herself as a temporary measure before her departure.
But a desperate client of the food pantry has noticed her theft and becomes determined to strike back. And by happenstance, this revenge also destroys Ma's family's ability to travel to safety.
I received a prepublication version of this title courtesy of NetGalley and Knopf.
Megha Majumdar is also the author of A Burning.
02 Immaculate Conception by Ling Ling Huang
Enka is from a fringe family, with little exposure to ideas, art, creativity, or opportunity. Yet she secures herself a position at an art school, where she struggles with imposter syndrome and individuality--and befriends Mathilde, a young woman who may be the most unique and inspiring artists of her generation.
In this speculative fiction story, issues of memory, creativity, wealth and power, envy, fame, self-doubt, and fear combine into an uncomfortable set of compromises, lies, and decisions that alternately bring together Enka and Mathilde, drive wedges between them, and jeopardize their trust and friendship.
03 The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai
Sonia is living away from her Indian family studying writing in Vermont, and after growing up used to having multiple family members around, feeding and speaking to her constantly, Sonia is still adjusting to the quiet of college, only having one housemate, and the cold and snow.
Sunny is a journalist in New York City, eager to escape his overbearing family.
But Sunny and Sonia were once the subjects of a matchmaking effort by their families. Will they be able to overcome that awkward start and see each other for the perfect match they may naturally be for each other?
Kiran Desai is also the author of The Inheritance of Loss. I'm listening to The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny as an audiobook.
