The Books I'm Reading Now

I'm listening to Rebecca Thorne's cozy sci-fi adventure Moss'd in Space; I'm listening to Laurie R. King's dry, lovely mystery featuring a retired Sherlock Holmes and a young Mary Russell, The Beekeeper's Apprentice; and I'm reading Sara Nović's memoir which explores her experiences in the deaf community, Mother Tongue.

01 Moss'd in Space by Rebecca Thorne

In Rebecca Thorne's cozy sci-fi adventure, it's sometime after the year 90,000, and Torian's years of saving have finally allowed her to buy a spaceship.

Now she can finally take her sister to a distant planet where the air quality will allow her to live longer than her current prognosis. She just has to convince her to come with her...and get her centuries-abandoned, moss-covered ship in working order.

But the moss is sentient, bossy, and suffering emotionally from having been left alone for so many years.

This is charming, creative, and wonderfully strange so far.

I'm listening to Moss'd in Space as an audiobook courtesy of my public library and Libby.

02 The Beekeeper's Apprentice (Mary Russell Mystery #1) by Laurie R. King

It's 1915 and Sherlock Holmes is bored out of his mind in retirement...until he happens to meet 15-year-old Mary Russell on the Sussex Downs.

She's curious, clever, doesn't mince words, and isn't concerned about social niceties. He's drawn back into life by Mary's promising intellect--and vague interest in his extensive knowledge and methods of investigation. Soon he is teaching her all he knows, and she is reluctantly absorbing his information and adding her own observations.

Soon they're working together to solve the mystery of a senator's kidnapped daughter, and Mary is quickly beginning to grow to be Holmes's equal.

I'm listening to this title as an audiobook courtesy of Libby and my local library.

03 Mother Tongue: A Memoir by Sara Novic

When Sara Nović was young, she loved hearing stories and listening music.

But after she failed her school's mandatory hearing test, she feared being labeled deaf, treated differently, and ostracized. She told no one of the test results and became doggedly determined to remain in the mainstream, hearing world.

After she could no longer pretend that she could hear, she learned American Sign Language, met other deaf people, learned about the vibrant deaf community, and reimagined her own labels and expectations.

Now the mother of a biological child who is hearing and an adopted child who is deaf, she mothers them within her own context and within the deaf community.

Sara Novic is also the author of the wonderful novel True Biz and Girl at War, which I haven't yet read.
