The Books I'm Reading Now

I'm listening to Donna Jones Alward's historical fiction debut focused around a real-life tragedy in Nova Scotia during World War I, When the World Fell Silent; I'm listening to mystery author Gillian McAllister's story of three siblings bound together by terrible secrets, That Night; and I'm reading the newest from the writing team of Christina Lauren. The Romance Revival is somewhat of a departure for them, and I'm intrigued.

What are you reading, bookworms?

01 When the World Fell Silent by Donna Jones Alward

It's 1917 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and two women are coping with the ripple effects of World War I.

Nora is living with her sister and nieces while her brother-in-law is off at war. Nora is a lieutenant in the Canadian Army Nursing Corps, and she's determined to find joy in any possible moment.

Charlotte reels from the news that her husband has died in the fighting overseas, and she and her baby Aileen live with her husband's cold, demanding family.

When a tragedy strikes Nova Scotia, both of their lives will be turned upside down.

This is earnest, and I feel sure that some version of a happy ending will be delivered after the heartache and loss.

I'm listening to this novel as an audiobook for my book club.

02 That Night by Gillian McAllister

Joe, Cathy, and Frannie are vacationing in Italy. After Frannie makes a frantic late-night call to her brother and her sister, they arrive to find that she has hit a man with her car. She is covered with blood, and he may no longer be alive.

The cover-up occurs immediately, with the book focusing on the repercussions of secrets, lies, loyalty, and sacrifices required to stick together.

Paranoia, fear, poor judgment, and panic all threaten to reveal the truth and send all three of them to prison.

I received a prepublication audio version of this title through Libro.fm and William Morrow.

Gillian McAllister is also the author of Wrong Place, Wrong Time, a book I loved, as well as Famous Last Words.

03 The Romance Revival by Christina Lauren

Scientist Emery Finch has always been hyper-focused on her career, but when she fell for landscaper Luca, she fell hard.

Their passionate married life was joyful and fulfilling at first...but Emery is hardly ever home, Luca carries all of the weight of the household, and they feel like they're not connecting anymore, if they ever truly did.

An unfathomable tragedy throws everything into a spiral, and Emery breaks every code of ethics to save Luca. But Luca retains no memory of Emery, their life, or his own personal past. Will this be a chance to start over, or the heartbreaking end?
