This hit the spot. Although you can see some of the big plot events coming, Center makes the journey so enjoyable that you just don’t care.
This hit the spot. Katherine Center's Cassie is a tough-as-nails firefighter who has closed herself off emotionally to protect herself. Her life is orderly and regimented and under control. Clearly everything is about to be upended so that Cassie is forced to alter her plans and careful schedule and figure out how to come through it all.
Although the reader can see some of the big plot events coming in Things You Save in a Fire, Center makes the journey so enjoyable that you just don’t care. This is a quick read that addresses serious matters—betrayal, loyalty, duty, trust, and love, with a little sleuthing and romance to round out things.
There is a surprisingly limited amount of actual firefighting, with one notable exception, but many other firefighter duties, training, and chains of command are made clear, so that it’s obvious Center did her homework on this front. I really liked her writing style and will be reading more by her.
