Review of Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller

Updated: Aug 21, 2020

I only wished this were longer so I could spend more time in Sheldon's head and in his company. I adored it.

Sheldon Horowitz is 82 and lives with his granddaughter and her husband in Oslo. He witnesses a murder and snatches his young great-grandson to flee the police and the bad guys.

Oh, how I loved Derek B. Miller's Norwegian by Night. I found myself reading it slowly so I could savor it. I only wished it were longer so I could spend more time in Sheldon's head and in his company. I adored it.

There's an unusual mix of adventure and heartwarming self-examination in this debut.

I’d forgotten that there was a second book in this series, American by Day, which I now recall that I very much want to read.

What did you think?

Have you read any of Miller's books? He also wrote a very different book, The Girl in Green, about a British journalist and an American private twenty years after they're linked by Gulf War events. This book is listed in the Greedy Reading List Six Captivating Nordic Stories.
